Saint-Pierre de Montmajour Abbey was founded in the distant year of 948, more than 1,000 years ago, and today serves no purpose other than to be admired by astonished tourists, the Benedictine monks having long since moved to other premises.
This fabulous national monument is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Montmajour Abbey is a masterpiece of medieval art and a source of inspiration for modern and contemporary art. The site particularly fascinated Van Gogh (1853-1890), who made a number of drawings there in 1888-1889. "Ascension", the work created by Alain Kirili (b. 1946) for the abbey choir, is a tribute to his use of "thick" colour.

Since 25 November 2005, the Tarasque festivities in Tarascon have been proclaimed by UNESCO as part of humanity's oral and intangible heritage.
